Embark on a Journey to Experience Christchurch, ‘The Garden City’

Christchurch, known affectionately as ‘The Garden City’, serves as the aerial gateway to New Zealand’s South Island. It’s a city brimming with charm, where beautiful streets strongly reminiscent of Britain intersect with the powerful energy of recovery from the 2011 Canterbury earthquake.

The compact city center is home to lush parks and historic buildings, while a short trip outside offers encounters with New Zealand’s unique wilderness and wildlife. This guide meticulously selects ‘genuinely recommended tourist spots’ that short-term visitors absolutely shouldn’t miss. We’ll also include tips for efficient sightseeing and navigating the local scene, so use it as your travel reference.

Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Spot Image

📍 Address: Rolleston Avenue, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8013 New Zealand

Everyone agrees that Christchurch Botanic Gardens, located in the heart of the city, is a ‘must-see’ when visiting Christchurch. This garden, which began in 1863 with the planting of an oak tree to commemorate the marriage of Britain’s Prince Albert and Princess Alexandra, has grown into a vast, healing space of 21 hectares (approximately 4.5 times the size of Tokyo Dome) nurturing over 50,000 plant species.

Within the gardens, you’ll find beautiful rose gardens, areas dedicated to New Zealand’s native plants, and impressive towering trees. The proximity to wild birds is astonishing; if you bring a little bread or snacks, you’ll quickly be surrounded by numerous ducks—a charming scene unique to New Zealand. You can enjoy different expressions throughout the year, with cherry blossoms in spring, various flowers in early summer, and vibrant autumn foliage.

Despite its scale and meticulous upkeep, admission to the gardens is free. The premises also feature stylish cafes and well-stocked souvenir shops, offering such a comprehensive selection that you could easily find all your New Zealand souvenirs here. On sunny days, locals enjoy taking a deep breath on a bench with a takeaway coffee or having a picnic on the lawn. Be sure to allocate ample time to visit this urban oasis, perfect for rejuvenating tired bodies.

Punting on the Avon

Spot Image

📍 Address: 2 Cambridge Terrace, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8013 New Zealand

The Avon River gracefully flows through the Botanic Gardens and the city center. ‘Punting’, a gentle glide across its surface in a small boat, is one of Christchurch’s signature elegant activities. A ‘punter’ (boatman) in traditional Edwardian attire and a boater hat skillfully navigates the boat with a single long pole, guiding you through the surrounding scenery and sharing historical insights.

Starting from the historic Antigua Boat Sheds, this approximately 30-minute river journey, passing by the Botanic Gardens with dappled sunlight, offers a blissful escape from daily hustle. In autumn, the willows along the riverbanks turn vibrant colors, creating an even more romantic atmosphere. As operations may be suspended during heavy rain with high water levels, it’s best to book on a clear day to be sure.

When purchasing tickets, it’s often more economical to choose a combo ticket that includes other activities like the ‘Christchurch Tram’ or the ‘Christchurch Gondola’. Depending on the season, you might also find discount coupons, so be sure to check official websites and tourist information centers when planning your sightseeing.

Cardboard Cathedral

Spot Image

📍 Address: 234 Hereford Street, Christchurch Central City, Christchurch 8011 New Zealand

The Christchurch Cathedral suffered severe damage in the 2011 Canterbury earthquake. In its place, this ‘Cardboard Cathedral’ was constructed in 2013 as a ‘transitional cathedral’ and has now become a new symbol of the city. The design was handled by the globally renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, famous for his disaster relief architecture.

The building’s most distinguishing feature, as its name suggests, is that it’s made of ‘cardboard’. The A-frame roof, constructed from 98 giant cardboard tubes (paper tubes) treated with special waterproofing and flame-retardant processing, combined with wood and steel, feels innovative yet somehow warm. Behind the altar, colorful triangular stained-glass windows are set, and the light streaming through them beautifully illuminates the interior.

Admission is free, and tourists are welcome to look inside (excluding during services like mass or weddings). Japanese explanation leaflets are also available at the entrance, and if you’re lucky, local volunteer staff might friendly explain its history and architectural secrets. It’s a striking, must-see spot where prayers for recovery and innovative design beautifully merge.

Willowbank Wildlife Reserve

Spot Image

📍 Address: 60 Hussey Road, Northwood, Christchurch 8051 New Zealand

For those who say, ‘I want to meet New Zealand’s native animals!’, we wholeheartedly recommend Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, located about 20 minutes by car from the city center and near the airport. Here, you can see New Zealand’s proud ‘Big 5’ (Kiwi, Kākā, Tuatara, Kea, Tākāhe) all in one place.

The biggest highlight is the exhibition of the ‘Kiwi’, New Zealand’s national bird. Kiwis are nocturnal birds that are very cautious, but here they are kept in a dedicated dark room (nocturnal house) with subdued lighting, allowing you to observe them actively moving around even during the day (from morning onwards). Their round, adorable forms pecking at the ground beyond a low fence, not behind glass, are truly moving. Photography with flash is strictly prohibited to protect their eyes, so be sure to engrave the sight firmly in your memory.

Furthermore, a secret to enjoying the reserve even more is to buy animal feed upon entry! There’s feed for birds, large animals, and even eels (!), allowing you to hand-feed free-roaming ducks, sheep, pigs, and donkeys directly. It’s a spot where both adults and children can become engrossed, getting up close and personal with animals living freely.

International Antarctic Centre

Spot Image

📍 Address: Corner Roy Place and, Orchard Road, Christchurch Airport, Christchurch 8052 New Zealand

The ‘International Antarctic Centre’ boasts a superb location, just a 5-minute walk from Christchurch Airport. Christchurch has, in fact, long played a crucial role as a departure point for Antarctic expeditions, and even today, many countries’ Antarctic research teams pass through here. This facility allows you to experience that history and environment firsthand.

The center is packed with attractions beyond mere exhibits. Particularly popular is the ‘Storm Room’ (Blizzard Experience). Entering a sub-zero room set to -5 degrees Celsius, you’ll periodically face a fierce blizzard at -18 degrees Celsius, literally feeling the harsh Antarctic environment (winter clothing provided). Furthermore, the off-road experience course, where you ride a ‘Hägglund’ snow vehicle actually used in Antarctic expeditions, tackling steep slopes and water puddles, guarantees thrills and excitement.

Additionally, the facility is home to rescued wild ‘Little Blue Penguins’, whose adorable antics can be observed up close during feeding times. Large suitcases can be stored for free at the reception, making it ideal to include in your schedule for free time before your flight on the last day of your trip, or to head straight there upon arrival at the airport. While the admission fee might be a bit high, it’s a fulfilling facility that offers excitement and learning far beyond the cost.

Tips for Enjoying Christchurch Sightseeing 120%

Christchurch is a flat and walkable city, allowing you to comfortably explore its main central attractions (such as the Botanic Gardens and Cardboard Cathedral) on foot. If you get a little tired, we recommend using the ‘Christchurch Tram’, with its retro vehicles running through the city. A one-day pass allows you to efficiently visit famous spots while listening to the driver’s unique tourist commentary (in English).

New Zealand is also a country known for its rapidly changing weather, often said to experience ‘four seasons in one day’. Even on sunny days, mornings and evenings can be chilly, and strong winds can suddenly pick up. Therefore, it’s a local rule of thumb to always carry a light jacket or windbreaker, even in summer.

The healing power of nature, historic architecture, and the resilience of recovery from an earthquake. Discover your own special moments in Christchurch, a city brimming with diverse attractions.
