高知城

📍 Address: 1-2-1 Marunouchi, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture 780-0850, Japan

Kochi Castle, soaring in the center of Kochi City, is one of only 12 ‘original existing castle keeps’ remaining in Japan. Its greatest charm is that not only the castle keep but also the ‘Honmaru Goten (Kaitokukan),’ where the lord resided and conducted affairs, remains completely intact. It’s an exceptionally valuable historical heritage site, as Kochi Castle is the only one in Japan where both the keep and the main palace exist in their original form.

Walking through the castle grounds, you’ll discover practical and robust defensive features everywhere, such as ‘ishi-toi’ (stone gutters) – drainage facilities unique to rainy Kochi – and ‘shinobi-gaeshi’ (anti-ninja spikes) designed to prevent enemy infiltration. A must-see for enthusiasts is the ‘Tsumemon’ gate connecting the Ni-no-maru (second bailey) and Honmaru (main bailey). You’ll be impressed by the clever mechanisms designed to repel enemies, such as diagonally placed entrances and ‘sama’ (loopholes) for concentrated attacks from all four directions.

From the top floor of the castle keep, after ascending the steep stairs, a magnificent 360-degree panoramic view of Kochi City unfolds. Kochi Castle is one of the few castles where you can step out onto the outer corridor (mawashi-en) from the window frame, so feel free to imagine yourself as a lord of old while enjoying the refreshing breeze. (Admission: Adults 500 yen *Revised April 2025) For those who wish to delve deeper into history, we recommend visiting the adjacent ‘Kochi Castle Museum of History’ before entering the castle. You can preview the castle’s structure with models and dioramas, and the terrace on the 3rd floor offers an excellent photo spot where you can capture both the Otemon Gate and the castle keep in a single shot.

桂浜公園

📍 Address: 6 Urado, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture 781-0262, Japan

Katsurahama Park, centered around the scenic Katsurahama Beach where the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean crash, is an absolute must-visit for Kochi sightseeing. Ascend a small hill, and you’ll be greeted by a giant statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, gazing out across the vast Pacific Ocean (and towards the Imperial Palace). The imposing presence, reaching 13.5 meters including the pedestal, is truly magnificent. If you look closely at his feet, you’ll notice he’s wearing Western boots despite his kimono, a characteristic befitting Ryoma, who dreamed of opening up the country.

Another highlight of Katsurahama is the retro Showa-era ‘Katsurahama Aquarium’ (nicknamed ‘Hamasui’) located on the beach. Though a small aquarium, don’t underestimate it. Here, you get unusually close to the animals, and some visitors affectionately call it a ‘billing hell’ (課金地獄, referring to the many paid feeding experiences). The reason is the abundance of feeding experiences available for 100 yen each. You can directly feed sea lions, seals, penguins, and even fiercely biting sea turtles, captivating both children and adults, allowing everyone to feel like a child again. (Admission: Adults 1600 yen)

Furthermore, proceed west through the park, cross Ryugu Bridge, and ascend the stairs to reach ‘Ryu-o Cape,’ which juts out into Katsurahama. After visiting the Watatsumi Shrine at the tip of the cape, turn back, and you’ll see the beautifully curving coastline of Katsurahama and the endlessly stretching blue horizon. It’s a perfect photo spot to enjoy the spectacular view while feeling the sea breeze.

はりまや橋

📍 Address: 1-1 Harimayacho, Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture 780-0822, Japan

Harimayabashi Bridge is sometimes satirically referred to as one of Japan’s ‘Three Great Disappointing Sights,’ alongside Sapporo Clock Tower and Nagasaki Hollander Slope. Its origin dates back to the Edo period when wealthy merchants, Harimaya and Hitsuya, built a private bridge for their mutual passage. After the river was filled in post-war, it was once just a solitary balustrade by a large road, earning it the ‘disappointing’ label. However, it has significantly changed today.

The surrounding area has been developed into a waterside park (Yosakoi Park), and the artificial murmur of the river has been revived. The vermilion drum bridge, recreated to its original appearance, is still compact, but combined with the passing streetcars, it creates a quaint and picturesque photo spot. If you visit expecting disappointment, you might be pleasantly surprised by its beauty.

A deep, unmissable point here is the ‘Harimayabashi Underground Passage (Underground Plaza).’ This underground tunnel beneath the road displays the red balustrades of the old bridge, actually used during the Taisho and Showa eras. Seeing the recreated bridge above ground and then experiencing the real history underground is how savvy travelers enjoy it.

Also, the nearby ‘Harimayabashi Shopping Street’ is an area with a charming retro atmosphere, featuring beautiful wooden arcades. Friday markets and Yosakoi events are frequently held here, allowing you to enjoy strolling through the town while feeling the daily life and passion of the people of Kochi.

龍河洞

📍 Address: 1424 Sakakawa, Tosayamada-cho, Kami City, Kochi Prefecture 782-0005, Japan

Located in Kami City, about a 40-minute drive from Kochi City, ‘Ryugado Cave’ is designated as a national natural monument and historic site, counted as one of Japan’s three great limestone caves. The artistic beauty of its formations, carved out of limestone by groundwater over an unimaginable 175 million years, is truly a work of nature. Of its approximately 4km total length, about 1km is open to the public as a sightseeing course.

The inside of the cave is quite narrow in some places, requiring you to bend and twist your body to proceed, offering a bit of an adventure. Highlights include not only the giant stalactites and stalagmites that have grown over long years but also Jomon period pottery discovered near the exit. The ancient ‘Vessel of God,’ integrated with a stalactite, presents a rare sight where nature and human history intersect. In recent years, fantastic projection mapping has been added, making it even more visually enjoyable. (Sightseeing Course: Adults 1500 yen)

If you’re seeking an even deeper experience, the ‘Adventure Course’ (reservations required, Sightseeing Course fee + 2000 yen) is highly recommended. Rent a special jumpsuit and boots, wear a helmet with a headlamp, and venture deep into the pitch-black darkness with a guide. Crawling through narrow passages and climbing wooden ladders for an authentic caving experience promises an intense sense of accomplishment and memories that regular travel cannot provide.
