Beppu Hells Tour

Spot Image

📍 Address: 559-1 Kannawa, Beppu, Oita 874-0000, Japan

‘Beppu Hells Tour’ is a quintessential tourist attraction representing Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. It’s an exceptionally entertaining spot where you can feel the Earth’s energy firsthand by visiting seven bizarre hot springs (Umi, Oniishibozu, Kamado, Oniyama, Shiraike, Chinoike, and Tatsumaki).

If you plan to conquer all of them, purchasing the ‘common admission ticket’ sold at each reception is highly recommended. You can efficiently complete the tour in about 2.5 hours, but there’s a trick to moving between areas.

The seven Hells are not actually concentrated in one place. Five of the Hells around ‘Umi Jigoku’ (Umi, Oniishibozu, Kamado, Oniyama, Shiraike) can be visited together on foot. However, ‘Chinoike Jigoku’ and ‘Tatsumaki Jigoku’ are about 3km apart. Therefore, the smartest strategy is to park near Umi Jigoku for the first five and walk, then move to the parking lot of Chinoike Jigoku by car or bus for the latter two.

One deep way to enjoy the tour that you absolutely shouldn’t forget is the existence of footbaths. ‘Oniishibozu Jigoku’, ‘Kamado Jigoku’, and ‘Chinoike Jigoku’ all have free footbaths utilizing natural hot spring water. While towels are sold on-site, bringing your favorite hand towel is very convenient for quickly soothing tired feet. Also, ‘Tatsumaki Jigoku’, where a geyser powerfully erupts, has fixed eruption timings (approximately every 30-40 minutes), so checking the next eruption time upon arrival is a golden rule for veteran travelers.

Takachiho Gorge

Spot Image

📍 Address: Mukoyama, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki 882-1103, Japan

Takachiho Gorge, a stunning power spot in Japan boasting one of the country’s most spectacular views, is a pride of Miyazaki Prefecture. Pyroclastic flows from Aso Volcano cooled and hardened, and the erosion by the Gokase River formed a magnificent V-shaped gorge with columnar joint cliffs. The sight of ‘Manai Falls’, selected as one of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls, cascading into the emerald green water is truly breathtaking.

The highlight of Takachiho Gorge is the ‘rental boats’ that allow you to see the waterfall up close, but this is where travelers often fall into a trap. Boats are extremely popular, so it’s rare to get one by just showing up on the day. Reservations start two weeks before the boarding date (at 9:00 AM) on the official reservation website, so be sure to secure your booking once your travel dates are set.

Even if you can’t get a boat reservation, there’s no need to be disappointed. The view of Takachiho Gorge from the promenade is also quite spectacular. ‘Early morning’ is especially recommended for a visit. With fewer tourists and crisp, clear air, you can have the sacred atmosphere, typical of Takachiho (the land of myths), all to yourself.

Also, parking areas near the boat boarding point fill up quickly. If you don’t mind a bit of a walk, utilizing the free parking lots where you can stroll along the gorge is another way to fully enjoy nature.

Kumamoto Castle

Spot Image

📍 Address: 1-1 Honmaru, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto 860-0002, Japan

Kumamoto Castle, built by Kiyomasa Kato and renowned as an ‘impregnable fortress’, suffered significant damage in the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. However, thanks to the strong determination of local residents and the latest technology, restoration efforts are vigorously underway. While complete restoration will still take time, this means there’s a ‘Kumamoto Castle that can only be seen now’.

The main attractions are the swiftly restored main keep and the ‘special viewing path’ where you can observe the restoration process up close. Walking alongside collapsed stone walls and cultural properties awaiting repair allows you to experience both the terror of the earthquake and the energy of recovery. This path is scheduled to be removed once restoration is complete, making it highly valuable to visit in this era.

The completely renovated exhibition inside the main keep is also a must-see. The history from its construction to the Seinan Civil War, earthquake, and recovery is explained very clearly with elaborate models and projection mapping, captivating even those unfamiliar with history. From the top floor observation deck, you can overlook Kumamoto’s castle town and the mountains of Aso.

After enjoying your castle tour, we also recommend stopping by ‘SAKURA MACHI Kumamoto’, a commercial complex at the foot of the castle. Its rooftop garden offers an excellent photo spot with a distant view of Kumamoto Castle, where a giant Kumamon will greet you.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Spot Image

📍 Address: 4 Chome-7-1 Saifu, Dazaifu, Fukuoka 818-0117, Japan

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, is an immensely popular spot in Fukuoka, attracting about 10 million visitors annually. Beyond prayers for academic success for students, it’s packed with elements for all ages to enjoy, such as its magnificent architectural beauty and gourmet street food along the approach.

Currently, Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is undergoing its ‘Reiwa Grand Renovation’ of the main sanctuary for the first time in 124 years. Alongside this, a ‘Provisional Main Hall’ has been constructed for the deity’s temporary relocation, which has become a talked-about spectacular spot that can only be seen now. Designed by world-renowned architect Sou Fujimoto, its innovative and mystical design, featuring a lush forest growing on the roof, presents a breathtaking beauty where modern architecture and tradition merge. Visiting this Provisional Main Hall is a limited-time opportunity until around 2026, so it’s definitely worth seeing.

When visiting, cross the ‘Taiko-bashi’ bridge, representing the past, present, and future, to purify your heart before proceeding to the main shrine (Provisional Hall). Within the precincts, there’s also the ‘Tobiume’ (Flying Plum Tree), which according to legend, flew overnight from Kyoto to follow Michizane, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in romantic history.

And don’t forget the vibrant food stroll along the approach. The local specialty, ‘Umegae Mochi’, is best enjoyed hot, with its surface crispy and fragrant. Taking a break at the stylish Starbucks designed by Kengo Kuma is also a classic Dazaifu route. If you wake up a little early and attend the morning rituals held from 8:30 AM, you can experience a divine atmosphere free from the daytime hustle and bustle.

Kusasenrigahama

Spot Image

📍 Address: Kusasenrigahama, Aso, Aso District, Kumamoto 869-1505, Japan

Kusasenrigahama is a place where you can dynamically experience the grand nature of Aso, boasting one of the world’s largest calderas. A vast grassland at an altitude of about 1,100m features large ponds formed by rainwater, with horses grazing freely around them, creating a picturesque scene straight out of a storybook.

A stroll on a clear day is wonderfully refreshing, but visitors often overlook that it can be ‘windy and cold’ due to the high altitude. While it serves as a summer retreat from the intense heat below, if visiting in early spring, autumn, or winter, it’s wise to bring an extra layer of warm clothing compared to lower elevations. Also, as it’s a natural grazing area, you might encounter horse droppings, and the soil around the ponds can be muddy. Wear comfortable shoes, such as sneakers, that you don’t mind getting dirty.

The best time to visit is, overwhelmingly, ‘early morning’. On clear days at sunrise, you might encounter a miraculous sight of a fantastical sea of clouds spreading across the Aso caldera and Kusasenrigahama, glowing golden in the morning sun. Taking a deep breath in the vast, silent nature will surely blow away your daily fatigue.

After your stroll, savoring a freshly seared ‘basashi steak skewer’ (horse meat steak skewer) in the souvenir shop area, soaking in the lingering essence of Aso, is another local delight.
