Himeji Castle

Spot Image

📍 Address: 68 Honmachi, Himeji, Hyogo 670-0012, Japan

When it comes to Hyogo Prefecture’s iconic tourist destinations, ‘Himeji Castle’ certainly stands out. This magnificent castle, the first in Japan to be registered as a World Heritage Site, is an extremely valuable historical structure that has escaped war and fire, preserving its original main keep and smaller keeps connected by corridors, known as a ‘renritsu-shiki tenshu’ (linked keep complex).

Known as ‘White Heron Castle’ due to the beauty of its white plaster walls, its pure white form shining against the blue sky exudes an overwhelming presence. It’s so highly praised in reviews, with comments like ‘beautiful from every angle, perfect for photos.’ The cherry blossom season, in particular, is exceptional, with the sight of full-bloom cherry trees embracing the castle being the epitome of ‘Japanese spring.’ The contrast of the summer blue sky, white walls, and surrounding greenery is also breathtakingly beautiful.

The grounds are vast, so even at a brisk pace, it takes time to explore. A key tip for sightseeing is to absolutely recommend entering ‘first thing in the morning’ during crowded holidays or the cherry blossom season. The castle interior has steep stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. Himeji Castle, viewed from the slightly distant ‘Otoko-yama Senhime Tenmangu Shrine,’ Nishinomaru Garden, or Sannomaru Square, also reveals different expressions and offers excellent photo opportunities.

Kobe Kitano Ijinkan Street

Spot Image

📍 Address: 2 Chome-3 Kitanocho, Chuo Ward, Kobe, Hyogo 650-0002, Japan

If you’re visiting the Kobe area, be sure to explore ‘Kobe Kitano Ijinkan Street,’ where you can fully immerse yourself in the exotic atmosphere unique to a port city. After the opening of Kobe Port in 1868, many foreigners established residences on this hillside overlooking the sea, fostering a unique and diverse culture.

Among the many Western-style houses, ‘Kazamidori no Yakata’ (Weathercock House, formerly the Thomas Residence), symbolized by the weathercock on its roof, and the beautiful ‘Moegi no Yakata’ (Moegi House), with its pale green exterior, are absolute must-see spots. If you plan to visit multiple houses, it’s recommended to purchase discounted tickets like the ‘Premium Pass,’ which also lets you enjoy a stamp rally. The cityscape of Kobe, viewed from inside each house through the windows, is a magnificent sight that will make you forget the effort of climbing the hills.

A common pitfall for travelers here is ‘access.’ While often advertised as a 15-minute walk from Sannomiya Station, it actually involves quite steep slopes (such as Kitanozaka), which can be very tiring. For efficient sightseeing, using the ‘City Loop’ tourist bus from Sannomiya is the best option. Alternatively, a lesser-known trick to avoid bus crowds is to access it from the Shin-Kobe Station side, which is relatively flatter geographically.

Akashi Kaikyo Bridge

Spot Image

📍 Address: 4 Higashimaikocho, Tarumi Ward, Kobe, Hyogo 655-0047, Japan

The ‘Akashi Kaikyo Bridge,’ connecting Tarumi Ward in Kobe City with Awaji Island, is a colossal suspension bridge that opened in 1998. It held the Guinness World Record as the longest suspension bridge until the Çanakkale 1915 Bridge opened in Turkey in 2022, and it still boasts the second-largest scale in the world. Its artificial beauty, affectionately known as the ‘Pearl Bridge,’ contrasted with the majestic natural sea, is truly stunning.

While admiring it from afar is nice, we highly recommend visiting the park at the base of the bridge to experience its overwhelming grandeur looking up from directly below. During the day, the white bridge stands out against the blue sea and sky, creating a sense of openness, but from evening to night, it transforms into a romantic and magical atmosphere with its illumination. It’s also recommended to photograph the bridge embraced by the morning sun, sunset, or occasional mist.

If accessing by car, the area around the ‘Tarumi IC/JCT’ on the Honshu side is very complex and intricate, so be sure to carefully check your navigation while driving. Eating a packed lunch at the quiet seaside around the bridge can be a wonderful refreshment, but be extremely careful as kites (birds of prey) might target your food from above!

Takeda Castle Ruins

Spot Image

📍 Address: 169 Kojozan, Takeda, Wadayama-cho, Asago, Hyogo 669-5252, Japan

Referred to as ‘Japan’s Machu Picchu’ or ‘Castle in the Sky,’ ‘Takeda Castle Ruins’ in Asago City constantly attracts tourists from all over the country. On the mountain peak, at an elevation of approximately 353m, magnificent stone walls, built with the nozura-zumi and anou-zumi techniques, remain intact, conveying the weight of history and romance of a time when a colossal fortress once stood here.

The biggest highlight is the spectacular view of the ‘sea of clouds’ where the castle ruins appear to float on a white sea of mist. The sea of clouds is most likely to occur during the autumn season, from mid-September to early December. The prime time is a ‘windless early morning (dawn to around 8 AM)’ after a cold night, on a clear day with a significant temperature difference between day and night. While looking down at the sea of clouds from within the castle ruins is mystical, if you want to capture the entire castle floating in the clouds, head to the ‘Ritsuunkyo’ observation deck on the opposite bank.

Access requires caution as it is a mountain castle. You can only go as far as ‘Yamashiro no Sato’ midway up the mountain by private car. From there, you’ll proceed by ‘Tenku Bus,’ taxi, or on foot. If you’re aiming for the sea of clouds in the early morning, you’ll be walking on dark mountain paths without streetlights, so a flashlight, comfortable hiking shoes, and ‘winter-grade cold weather gear’ for waiting at the summit are essential items.

Uzushio Cruise (Michi-no-Eki Fukura)

Spot Image

📍 Address: Uzushio Dome Nanairokan, Fukura-ko, Minamiawaji, Hyogo 656-0501, Japan

The ‘Uzushio Cruise,’ departing from Fukura Port in Minamiawaji City, at the southern tip of Awaji Island, is a highly popular activity where you can experience the colossal ‘Naruto Whirlpools’ of the Naruto Strait, one of the world’s three great tidal currents, up close from aboard a ship. The hospitality and performance, such as staff waving flags to see you off upon departure, build excitement even before boarding.

The size of the whirlpools is greatly influenced by the lunar phases and tides. The key to the best experience is to aim for ‘spring tide’ days. Especially during the spring and autumn spring tide seasons, the largest whirlpools are more likely to occur. It’s smart to always check the ‘tide table’ on the official website in advance and make a web reservation for a departure time with a ‘◎’ (excellent) expectation rating.

During the approximately one-hour cruise, the onboard guide announcements precisely indicate the whirlpool generation points, so there’s no need to worry about missing them. The open deck is best for taking impressive photos, but the sea is windier and much colder than on land. Even on sunny spring or autumn days, be sure to take thorough cold weather precautions, such as a down jacket, scarf, and gloves. Another welcome point is the availability of free parking at Michi-no-Eki Fukura (Roadside Station Fukura).
