Fukuoka Tower

📍 Address: 2-3-26 Momochihama, Sawara Ward, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture 814-0001, Japan

Fukuoka Tower, standing 234m tall and cherished as a symbol of Fukuoka, boasts the tallest height among seaside towers in Japan. Its sharp triangular exterior, covered with 8,000 half-mirrors, is called ‘Mirror Sail,’ and its appearance, reflecting the blue sky, is breathtaking.

From the top observation deck on the 123m floor, you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view, from the seascape of Hakata Bay to the Fukuoka city area. The recommended time to visit is just before sunset. You can enjoy the magnificent gradation from the sunset sinking into the sea to the cityscape glowing with neon lights. However, long queues for the elevator tend to form right after sunset, so it’s smart to visit with plenty of time.

Additionally, the observation deck on the 116m floor is certified as a ‘Lover’s Sanctuary,’ and the ‘Oath Fence’ where couples can attach heart-shaped padlocks is very popular. After visiting the tower, a stroll along the beach at ‘Seaside Momochi Park,’ located right behind it, to feel the pleasant sea breeze, is also a fantastic leisure experience.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Spot Image

📍 Address: 4-7-1 Saifu, Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture 818-0117, Japan

One unmissable spot in Fukuoka is ‘Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine,’ dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of scholarship. It is the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines nationwide, attracting approximately 10 million worshippers annually.

Currently, the Main Hall, a nationally important cultural property, is undergoing its first major renovation in 124 years, but a special sight that can only be seen now awaits visitors. The ‘Temporary Main Hall,’ built in front of the Main Hall, was designed by world-renowned architect Sou Fujimoto. Inspired by the ‘Tobiume (flying plum tree) legend,’ where a plum tree flew from Kyoto to follow Michizane, it features an innovative design where ‘a forest floats on the roof.’ This temporary hall is a rare space available for only about three years, beautifully fusing tradition and modern architecture, so be sure to witness it.

When visiting, purify your mind by crossing the Taikobashi bridge, which represents ‘past, present, and future.’ And don’t miss sampling local delicacies along the approach. The famous ‘Umegae Mochi’ has a crispy, fragrant exterior and is filled with delicately sweet red bean paste. Enjoying a freshly baked one on the spot is the true pleasure of Dazaifu sightseeing.

Canal City Hakata

📍 Address: 1-2-2 Sumiyoshi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture 812-0018, Japan

True to its concept of ‘Theater of the City,’ Canal City Hakata is a large-scale commercial complex where shopping, dining, and entertainment are all integrated into one. Its distinctive structure, with a canal flowing through the center, and its colorful, curved buildings create a sense of the extraordinary and excitement just by walking through them.

The biggest highlight is the free fountain show regularly held at the Sun Plaza Stage on the first basement floor. Not only does water dance to music, but at night, the spectacular 3D projection mapping ‘Canal Aqua Panorama’ is displayed on the facility walls and glass surfaces, captivating both children and adults, making them stop and gaze.

The facility also boasts ‘Ramen Stadium,’ where you can sample different Fukuoka ramens, and character goods stores that even international tourists rave about. As it is entirely indoors, it’s a very convenient stop for travelers, offering comfortable enjoyment all day long, even on bad weather days.

Hakata Specialty Umakamon Street

Spot Image

📍 Address: 1-15-3 Makoto, Tenjin, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture 810-0001, Japan

Just beside Suikyō Tenmangu Shrine, marked by its red wall in the heart of Tenjin, lies a quiet, narrow alley called ‘Hakata Specialty Umakamon Street.’ Despite being in an area of towering skyscrapers, this narrow alley retains the nostalgic atmosphere of the Showa era and is immensely popular among local business people as a deep, authentic spot.

If you come here, you absolutely must try the eatery ‘Makoto’ located within the alley. Their lunch menu is boldly simple, offering only one item: the ‘grilled mackerel set meal’! This dish, featuring a large, fatty mackerel grilled crispy over charcoal, is well worth waiting in line for. Since there’s only one menu item, the turnover is surprisingly fast even if there’s a queue, which is another welcome point for reducing waiting stress.

At night, the entire alley is illuminated by red lanterns and signs, transforming into a cozy local drinking spot. This place is highly recommended for those who want to experience authentic Hakata food culture that hasn’t been overly commercialized for tourists.

Hakata Old Town Area

Spot Image

📍 Address: 1-7 Hakataekimae, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka, Fukuoka Prefecture 812-0011, Japan

Spreading around ‘Gion Station,’ just one subway stop from Hakata Station, ‘Hakata Old Town’ is an area that strongly retains the historical traces of its prosperity as the largest trading city in the Middle Ages. Step away from the urban hustle and bustle, and you’ll find a tranquil streetscape dotted with serene temples and shrines.

Especially worth walking is ‘Jotenji Street.’ Jotenji Temple, known as the birthplace of the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, has a monument marking it as the ‘birthplace of Udon and Soba,’ allowing visitors to feel the roots of Japanese food culture. As you wander further, you can find ‘Hakata-bei Walls’ where burnt tiles and stones are embedded in mud walls. These walls were constructed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Taiko Machiwari (post-war reconstruction), reusing rubble from war damage solidified with clay. They convey the resilience of the people of that time and their ‘ultimate spirit of recycling’ to this day.

While there are no flashy attractions, by slowly strolling through the back alleys and learning about their historical background, you can touch upon the deeper aspects of Fukuoka as a city. It’s a high-quality leisure spot for adults.

Summary

The greatest charm of sightseeing and leisure in Fukuoka is that the enjoyment of a modern city coexists with the weight of centuries-old history. After enjoying breathtaking views from the tower and spectacular fountain shows, savor an exquisite lunch in a back alley, then spend tranquil time in the old town or shrines. Planning such a varied itinerary will undoubtedly lead to a more satisfying trip.
