Hawaii is Evolving into a Vegan & Organic Paradise!

In Hawaii, the perpetual summer paradise, awareness of ‘sustainability’ and ‘wellness’ has been rapidly increasing in recent years. Consequently, a growing number of restaurants and cafes catering to vegan (plant-based), allergy-friendly, and healthy lifestyles have been opening.

‘Hawaiian meals can be heavy and greasy, leaving my stomach tired by the end of the trip…’ For short-term visitors with such concerns, as well as medium to long-term residents and students who prioritize daily health management, and even local residents, we’ve carefully selected five truly delicious plant-based and healthy gourmet spots that have garnered overwhelming support from a wide range of people. Beyond just taste, we’ll provide authentic local information, including ordering tips unique to Hawaii and the ambiance of each establishment.

Peace Cafe Hawaii

📍 Address: 2239 S King St, Honolulu, HI 96826 USA

Located on South King Street, slightly away from Waikiki, ‘Peace Cafe’ is a 100% vegan restaurant highly praised by Japanese residents and students as a ‘super secret gem!’ The owner couple is Japanese, and surprisingly, the husband is a former Japanese chef. As a result, the dishes feature delicate seasoning that harnesses the umami of dashi (broth) and the nutritional value of ingredients, gently soothing stomachs tired of Hawaii’s typically rich flavors.

The menu offers satisfying dishes like Taco Rice, Moroccan Stew, and Katsu Curry that will make you wonder, ‘Is this really vegan!?’ They recently started serving breakfast, with popular items including gluten-free pancakes.

The interior exudes a calm and peaceful atmosphere, creating a cozy space where locals and tourists mingle. Many staff members speak Japanese, allowing students new to living abroad and travelers to dine with peace of mind. While there’s free parking behind the store, spaces are limited, and parking on the street in front can lead to towing during certain hours, so it’s best to confirm with the staff beforehand if you’re driving.

ALO Cafe Hawaii – Waikiki

📍 Address: 159 Kaʻiulani Ave #105, Honolulu, HI 96815 USA

Boasting excellent access in the heart of Waikiki, ‘ALO Cafe Hawaii’ is a vegan cafe dedicated to plant-based ingredients, serving dishes free of preservatives and refined sugar. Among health-conscious travelers, their acai bowls are a hot topic, often lauded as ‘the best ever!’ Made with 100% fruit and plant-based milk, without added water or ice, you can savor a fresh and rich flavor. There’s only a one-dollar difference between M and L sizes, so for those who want to eat generously, the L size offers better value.

The interior is enveloped in the warmth of wood, and light meals like their simple yet addictive avocado toast and homemade banana cake are also superb. However, indoor seating is very limited, with only about 3-5 seats. Thus, the ‘beach acai’ style—purchasing from the cafe and taking it to nearby Waikiki Beach to enjoy—has become a staple for locals and seasoned travelers. Don’t miss out on repeat customer coupons you can get by visiting multiple times.

ALO Cafe Hawaii – SALT

📍 Address: 691 Auahi St #2-114, Honolulu, HI 96813 USA

This is another ALO Cafe location, opened within ‘SALT at Our Kakaʻako,’ a complex in Honolulu’s trendy Kakaʻako district. Its excellent location allows for a casual stop during a wall art stroll, and the interior features tastefully arranged houseplants, creating an urban yet relaxing atmosphere.

Similar to the Waikiki store, it offers a full range of smoothies and acai bowls (the vividly purple Dragon Bowl is particularly popular for photos), plus this location also serves meal items such as ‘Zen Shoyu Ramen.’ This vegan ramen, with roasted tomatoes, bok choy, and a fragrant hint of sesame oil, is so delicious that both children and adults will exclaim, ‘I want to eat this again!’

The staff are also very considerate towards families with children. We recommend taking out an affordable all-day breakfast set (like banana toast) along with a latte, where you can choose between oat or almond milk, and relaxing in the complex’s courtyard.

Nature Waikiki

📍 Address: 413 Seaside Ave #2F, Honolulu, HI 96815 USA

Discreetly located on the second floor of the Japanese restaurant ‘ZIGU’ along Seaside Avenue in the heart of Waikiki, ‘Nature Waikiki’ is a sustainable Island French restaurant with the concept ‘Beyond the Farm to Table.’ It’s one of Hawaii’s leading fine dining establishments, crafted by Japanese Executive Chef Natsue Ogawa, who trained in Tokyo and Paris, and has also received the prestigious Hale Aina Award.

The dishes, which generously use Hawaiian organic ingredients, include not only regular courses like charcoal-grilled steaks with irresistible aroma but also fully vegan and vegetarian plant-based courses. Its gentle yet profound flavors are perfect for those whose stomachs have become fatigued by typical Hawaiian cuisine.

Another appealing aspect is its flexibility, offering a ‘mini-course’ perfectly sized for Japanese appetites, or the option to quickly enjoy à la carte items in the bar area. They can also prepare special message plates for anniversaries or birthdays, making it an absolute recommendation for a romantic dinner, even if you’re dining with vegans. (Note: Be careful not to confuse the entrance with the separate restaurant on the first floor.)

Kaimana Farm Cafe Deli

📍 Address: 845 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816 USA

This deli & cafe boasts an excellent location along Kapahulu Avenue, next to the famous ‘Leonard’s Bakery’ for malasadas, and across from the ‘Safeway’ supermarket. Run by a Japanese owner, it offers delicious deli items and meals made with carefully selected ingredients, including organic vegetables, which are precious in Hawaii.

Their signature menu item is the ‘Power Bento,’ where you can choose five side dishes from the display case. While selecting healthy sides like kale salad and hijiki, customers rave about the ‘extremely delicious!’ and generous portion of chicken or hamburg steak proudly placed in the center. Also, the soufflé omelet is guaranteed to be Instagram-worthy, and we recommend adding a cheese topping.

When the Japanese owner is in the kitchen, Japanese language support is smooth. Furthermore, the serving staff (including the owner’s son) are incredibly hospitable, kindly guiding you to parking and even offering water to dogs, allowing you to experience heartwarming local interactions. For those with rental cars, stopping by on the way to or from shopping at the supermarket across the street is a smart way to utilize its location.

Tips for Maximizing Your Vegan & Healthy Gourmet Experience in Hawaii

To smartly navigate these eateries like the locals, ‘timing your visit’ and ‘utilizing takeout’ are key. Popular cafes, especially for acai bowls, often see long queues during morning breakfast hours. For places with limited seating, instead of trying to force your way in, simply grab takeout and enjoy it on a nearby beach or park bench, feeling the ocean breeze—that’s the ‘Hawaiian style.’

Also, if you’re accessing by rental car, be mindful of parking rules. In Hawaii, exceeding the time limit for street parking (Tow-Away Zone) even slightly will result in your car being towed immediately. It’s safest to ask the staff beforehand if there’s dedicated parking behind the store or if you can correctly use nearby supermarket or shopping center parking.

Hawaii’s food culture offers a borderless experience for everyone, from travelers to long-term residents. Take care of your stomach and discover new Hawaiian flavors!
