Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. While its delicious cuisine and vibrant night markets often grab the spotlight, the city’s true charm lies in the beautiful intersection of its complex, profound history and modern life.

This article selects five must-visit ‘Taipei tourist attractions’ for ‘travelers’ to Taipei, where you can feel the depth of history and the authentic local atmosphere. We’ll introduce you to a deeper way to explore Taipei, beyond just taking photos.

National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

Spot Image

📍 Address: 100, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan

A vast complex and an overwhelming, pure white marble building suddenly appear in the heart of Taipei. Completed in 1980 to commemorate Chiang Kai-shek, the first President of the Republic of China, this site is truly a highlight of Taipei tourism. Its octagonal blue roof symbolizes the ‘Eight Virtues’ (loyalty, filial piety, benevolence, love, faithfulness, righteousness, harmony, and peace) advocated by Sun Yat-sen, with the blue and white contrast beautifully standing out against the sky.

If you’re visiting this place, the morning hours are especially recommended. In the spacious Liberty Square and gardens, you’ll see locals practicing Tai Chi, dancing, and exercising, allowing you to experience a unique atmosphere where solemn historical architecture blends with everyday local life.

Also, don’t miss the guard performance. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, long held in front of the Chiang Kai-shek statue inside the hall, has now changed its style to an honor guard parade on the outdoor Democracy Boulevard, offering a more open and dynamic spectacle. As you reflect on its historical background, witness their perfectly synchronized movements.

National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine

Spot Image

📍 Address: No. 139號, Beian Rd, Zhongshan District, Taipei City, Taiwan 10491

Located slightly north of central Taipei, the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine is a sacred place dedicated to approximately 330,000 fallen heroes who lost their lives in events such as the Xinhai Revolution and the Anti-Japanese War. Built on the former site of a Japanese Shinto shrine, its current architecture is a majestic and grand structure modeled after Beijing’s Forbidden City’s Hall of Supreme Harmony. Unlike the open atmosphere of Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, a solemn air permeates here the moment you step inside, making you stand a little straighter.

The main highlight here is the Changing of the Guard ceremony, held every hour. Elite soldiers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, all over 178cm tall, don their respective uniforms (deep green for the Army, blue for the Air Force, black or white for the Navy) and march from the main gate to the main hall, a journey taking about 20 minutes. The sound of their shoe cleats striking the ground and their precise movements as they cross bayonets are a profound expression of respect for the heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Observing the guards standing motionless at the gate and the traces of their march etched into the ground up close, you can truly feel the arduous history Taiwan has endured. When visiting, please observe proper etiquette, such as removing your hat in the main hall.

Taipei Hakka Cultural Park

📍 Address: No. 2號, Section 3, Tingzhou Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100

To understand Taiwan’s diverse culture, the presence of the ‘Hakka’ people is essential. Historically, many Hakka people gathered in the area south of Taipei City, and this park preserves and conveys that memory and tradition to the present day. The park features extensive exhibits where you can learn about Hakka-specific architectural styles and daily life, and you can visit freely as admission is free.

Away from the hustle and bustle of tourist spots, this place is also an oasis for locals. Its riverside location offers great views and makes it popular as a starting point for cycling routes. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll or jog while soaking in the rich nature of Taiwan and the fusion of traditional culture.

Even when time is limited during your trip, why not take a break in such a local park? On a clear day, you might discover a different side of Taipei.

Zhongshan Hall (Former Taipei Public Hall)

Spot Image

📍 Address: No. 98, Yanping S Rd, Zhongzheng District, Taipei City, Taiwan 100

Just beside Ximending, a vibrant district bustling with youth, stands a historical building quietly marking time. Constructed in 1936 (Showa 11) as the ‘Taipei Public Hall,’ this building was renamed ‘Zhongshan Hall’ after the war and served for a long time as a crucial hub for Taiwanese politics, hosting speeches by Chiang Kai-shek and elections. Today, it is designated a National Historic Site and cherished as an active concert hall and a center for arts and culture.

While merely walking through the hall allows you to feel its profound history, for a deeper taste of Taipei, venture to the ‘4F Theater Café’ on the fourth floor. Adorned with retro furniture and old projectors, the interior is an academic space that feels like a journey back in time.

The menu is strictly ‘coffee only,’ a purist approach, with authentic brews meticulously extracted using a siphon. Their dedication is genuine, even letting customers sample the aroma of the beans before brewing. While resting your tired body, you can savor a supreme cup in a corner of this historic building – a luxurious experience unique to adult travelers.

Zhongshan Stele Forest

Spot Image

📍 Address: No. 505, Section 4, Ren’ai Rd, Xinyi District, Taipei City, Taiwan 110

Nestled quietly within the grounds of the National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, just outside the MRT exit, is the ‘Zhongshan Stele Forest.’ Here, you’ll find seated and standing statues of Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan), the Father of the Republic of China, behind which granite steles inscribed with the words of renowned figures are neatly arranged. The precisely symmetrical arrangement of the steles and the beautiful garden create a tranquil and solemn space.

What makes this place special is the magnificent contrast where past and present coexist. Looking up at the sky from within the history- and contemplation-filled stele forest, the modern ‘Taipei 101’ towers nearby. It’s an excellent photo spot to capture the energy of Taipei, a city that honors tradition while moving towards the future.

Despite being a tourist attraction, it’s not overly crowded, making it perfect for quietly admiring the steles or sitting on a bench to observe the surroundings. It’s a hidden gem in the heart of Taipei where you can enjoy surprisingly peaceful moments.

Taipei’s Profound Charm: Where Past and Present Intersect
