Shodoshima, part of Kagawa Prefecture, is the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea. Blessed with beautiful waters and a mild climate, its landscape evokes the Mediterranean, making it a popular destination for many travelers from Japan and abroad.

This article introduces five carefully selected spots, from iconic must-see attractions to deep hidden gems and even locations featured in popular anime, that you absolutely shouldn’t miss when visiting Shodoshima. While spontaneous travel can be fun, many places are influenced by natural phenomena and crowd levels. Knowing the local realities in advance will significantly enhance your satisfaction.

Angel Road

📍 Address: 24-92 Ko, Tonosho-cho, Shodoshima-gun, Kagawa 761-4101, Japan

‘Angel Road’ (Tenshi no Sanpomichi, or ‘Angel’s Walkway’) is synonymous with Shodoshima tourism. Usually submerged, this sandbar appears from the sea only twice a day during low tide, allowing visitors to walk across to a small island. This rare natural phenomenon is called a ‘tombolo’ and is immensely popular as a romantic spot, with the romantic superstition that ‘holding hands with a loved one while crossing will make your wish come true.’

An absolute must-do when visiting Angel Road is ‘checking the tide table in advance.’ The sand path appears for about 2-3 hours before and after the lowest tide. You can enjoy a more magical scenery when the path is just beginning to emerge or just before the waves reclaim it, rather than when it’s fully exposed. If you can time your visit with the sunset, you’ll encounter a breathtaking view.

Practical tips for visiting include preparing your footwear and considering parking. Many travelers walk along the waterline or venture into shallow areas where the path isn’t fully connected, so it’s wise to bring sandals you don’t mind getting wet and a towel. Additionally, the nearest No. 1 parking lot will become paid from February 2025 (starting at 300 JPY for 30 minutes). If you want to relax and enjoy the scenery, using nearby free parking (like No. 2 parking) is a smart choice, even if it means a short walk.

Michi-no-Eki Shodoshima Olive Park

📍 Address: 1941-1 Ko, Nishimura, Shodoshima-cho, Shodoshima-gun, Kagawa 761-4434, Japan

Shodoshima Olive Park, a ‘Michi-no-Eki’ (Roadside Station), is spread across a small hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, featuring approximately 2,000 olive trees. The park’s iconic white ‘Greek Windmill’ was built as a symbol of friendship with Milos Island in Greece, with which Shodoshima has a sister island agreement. Its appearance, set against the blue sea and sky, creates the illusion of having stumbled into a Mediterranean resort.

The biggest highlight of this park is the relocation of the live-action film ‘Kiki’s Delivery Service’ set (Koriko general store). In connection with this, the Olive Memorial Museum offers ‘magic brooms’ for free rental. By straddling a broom and jumping in front of the Greek windmill, you can capture a photogenic shot as if flying through the sky, with many travelers, both adults and children, enjoying striking various poses.

Beyond being just a photo spot, another charm of this place is the opportunity to learn about the history of olives. Shodoshima is actually the ‘birthplace of olive cultivation’ in Japan, where olive growing began as a national policy during the Meiji era and was first successfully cultivated. The park’s memorial museum features easy-to-understand panel exhibits on this history. Gaining this knowledge before exploring the rest of the island will give you a deeper appreciation for Shodoshima’s scenery. For a break during your stroll, be sure to try the famous ‘Olive Soft Serve Ice Cream,’ with its beautiful faint green color.

Kibo no Michi (Road of Hope)

📍 Address: 57 Otsu, Tachibana, Shodoshima-cho, Shodoshima-gun, Kagawa 761-4405, Japan

In stark contrast to the bustling Angel Road in Tonosho Town, ‘Kibo no Michi’ (Road of Hope) is a hidden gem known only to a select few. Located on the eastern coast of Shodoshima, beneath an observation deck called Nampudai, this spot also showcases a tombolo phenomenon where a sand path leading to Jogashima Island appears only during low tide. It is truly ‘another Angel Road.’

Its biggest appeal is the significantly fewer people compared to its famous counterpart, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful scenery almost entirely to yourself if timed correctly. The sea’s clarity is also remarkably high, letting you experience pristine nature firsthand. However, the difficulty of access is slightly higher. The path from the observation deck’s parking lot down to the coast is a rough trail and rocky terrain, requiring careful movement with appropriate footwear.

Further caution is needed regarding the rapid rise of the tide and the strict conditions for crossing. The sandbar submerges faster than Angel Road, and the path may not even appear unless you aim for spring or neap tides. There are many accounts of people getting engrossed in play, only to find the tide coming in and having to rush back with water up to their knees. The absence of people around means there’s no one to help. This slightly thrilling scenic spot demands crisis management skills to retreat immediately without lingering if you notice any signs of the tide coming in.

Kankakei Gorge Ropeway

📍 Address: 168 Otsu, Kankakei-dori, Shodoshima-cho, Shodoshima-gun, Kagawa 761-4433, Japan

‘Kankakei Gorge’ is one of Shodoshima’s premier scenic spots, counted among Japan’s Three Great Beautiful Gorges. From the summit observation deck, you can simultaneously gaze upon the valley of uniquely shaped rocks, sculpted over countless years, and the picturesque archipelago of the Seto Inland Sea stretching beyond.

While it is possible to access the summit station by car, we strongly recommend parking at the foot of the mountain at ‘Kountei Station’ and taking the ropeway. The contrast between the rugged rock faces and the trees, visible only from the floating gondola, is truly spectacular. Especially during the autumn foliage season, the entire mountain is painted in reds and yellows, presenting a breathtaking beauty.

A unique activity at the summit station is ‘Kawara Nage’ (tile throwing), which you can try for 200 JPY (5 tiles) per group. You throw small unglazed tiles towards an iron ring about 5 meters from the observation deck, and it’s said that successfully passing a tile through the ring will ward off evil or grant wishes. It’s easily affected by wind and very difficult to control, guaranteeing a lively and fun experience with your companions. During the autumn foliage season, the ropeway can get extremely crowded, so the best strategy to avoid waiting times is to aim for the first ride at 8 AM.

Tonosho BASE

📍 Address: 5978-42 Ko, Tonosho-cho, Shodoshima-gun, Kagawa 761-4104, Japan

Shodoshima is also known as the setting for the popular anime ‘Teasing Master Takagi-san’ (the hometown of the original author, Soichiro Yamamoto), attracting many fans from across Japan for ‘pilgrimages to sacred sites.’ The absolute must-visit starting point for such a pilgrimage is ‘Tonosho BASE,’ an information hub located on the second floor of the Tonosho Port fast ferry terminal (Olive Port Tonosho).

Admission is free, and you can casually drop in. The interior is designed to evoke a classroom atmosphere, featuring a life-sized figure of Takagi-san and the bicycle that appears in the anime. Furthermore, a ‘Stage Exploration Map’ (anime pilgrimage map) that compares anime scenes with actual locations is distributed for free, making it an unparalleled spot for gathering information before embarking on your island tour.

Additionally, the ‘Memory Notebooks’ (message notebooks), which serve as a place for fans to interact, are filled with passionate messages from visitors nationwide across several volumes. Limited-edition can badge gachapon machines and exclusive merchandise collaborating with Shodoshima’s famous olive oil and somen noodles are also displayed and sold here. This spot allows anime fans and even other travelers to experience the vibrant new culture unique to Shodoshima.

Tips for Fully Enjoying Shodoshima Tourism

Shodoshima is the second-largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, and the spots introduced in this article are scattered across various locations. While local buses operate, some routes have limited services, so renting a car or a motorbike is highly recommended for efficiently visiting tourist attractions.

Furthermore, a distinctive feature of Shodoshima tourism is that key spots like ‘Angel Road’ and ‘Kibo no Michi’ have access dictated by natural timings (tides). When planning your trip, in addition to ferry schedules, be sure to check the local ‘tide table’ in advance and build your schedule around low tide times. This is the biggest secret to fully enjoying Shodoshima.
