Mui Ne Fishing Village
📍 Address: Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, Mũi Né, Bình Thuận, Vietnam
Sprawling along the Mui Ne coastline, the ‘Fishing Village’ is a valuable spot to experience authentic Vietnamese fishing village culture that hasn’t been overly commercialized. The sight of countless colorful, bowl-shaped ‘Thung Chai’ boats clustered in the blue sea is truly breathtaking. It’s an absolute must-visit and iconic photo spot when you come to Mui Ne.
The best time to visit, when it’s most vibrant, is from early morning to late morning. In the morning hours, a local fish market opens with freshly caught seafood, allowing you to feel the energy of the local fishermen and market vendors. However, after noon, the sun intensifies, the smell of fish becomes stronger, and litter on the beach becomes more noticeable. So, if you want to enjoy a comfortable stroll and photography, it’s best to go early. At dusk, the silhouettes of the boats rocking on the waves are beautiful, offering a different, nostalgic scene.
If you descend the stairs to the beach, you might even get a chance to ride one of these bowl-shaped boats for a small fee. While there are also tent stalls that cook freshly caught seafood, there’s a risk of tourists being overcharged (scammed) if they negotiate directly. It’s a wise move to simply enjoy the local atmosphere and dine at nearby restaurants or establishments booked through your hotel to avoid any unpleasant experiences.
Fairy Stream, Mui Ne
📍 Address: 40B Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, khu phố 4, Mũi Né, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam
Known as ‘Suoi Tien’ (Fairy Stream), this unique natural spot offers an unparalleled experience in Mui Ne. With its striking formations of red, white, and orange sand and limestone cliffs carved by erosion, it presents a dynamic landscape reminiscent of a mini Grand Canyon.
The biggest thrill here is walking barefoot through the stream. The ankle-deep water flows over a bed of fine, silky sand and slippery mud, providing a refreshing and wonderfully therapeutic sensation for your bare feet. The round trip takes less than an hour, and it’s safe for both children and adults with few dangerous stones. However, some parts of the path may have deeper, swamp-like areas where your feet can sink almost to your thighs, or sections with loose pebbles. If you’re concerned, it’s advisable to bring sport sandals with heel straps. As your clothes might get wet, we highly recommend visiting in swimwear or shorts.
While basic admission is free, there’s a small fee of about 5,000 VND if you use the shoe storage, foot-washing area, or restrooms at the entrance. Considering it an admission fee, it’s incredibly cheap. At the end of the path, you’ll find a small waterfall, and along the way, there are naturally integrated cafes and rest stops. So, if you get tired, you can enjoy a cold drink and explore at your own pace.
Linh Long Pagoda
📍 Address: W7HP+2CV, Mui Ne, Lam Dong, Vietnam
Amidst Mui Ne’s many active tourist destinations like sand dunes and beaches, ‘Linh Long Pagoda’ (Linh Long Tu Temple), quietly nestled in the town, is highly recommended for those seeking tranquility and spiritual healing. Believed to have been founded in 1811, this temple is one of Mui Ne’s oldest Buddhist temples, boasting over 200 years of history.
The architecture, adorned with magnificent and intricate carvings and vibrant decorations, beautifully blends Vietnamese and Buddhist traditional styles. Thanks to thorough renovations, it shows no signs of aging. As you proceed through the temple grounds, pass the inner sanctuary where shoes are prohibited, and climb the stairs at the back, a grand white reclining Buddha (Nirvana Buddha) greets worshippers with a serene expression. Perched on a hill, it also offers a hidden viewpoint where you can catch glimpses of Mui Ne’s sea and harbor.
Its charm lies in not being overrun by tourists, allowing for a peaceful visit. While aspects like some litter outside the grounds or in parts of the garden reflect typical environmental awareness challenges in Vietnam, you can spend a quiet moment finding solace in the beautiful decorations and the adorable dogs relaxing within the premises.
Po Sah Inu Cham Towers
📍 Address: W4PW+9CJ, Phu Thuy, Lam Dong, Vietnam
On Ong Hoang Hill, along the road connecting Phan Thiet city and central Mui Ne, stand the ‘Po Sah Inu Cham Towers.’ These are precious surviving Hindu ruins, built by the Champa Kingdom, which prospered across central and southern Vietnam from the late 8th to 9th centuries.
The ruins primarily consist of brick towers dedicated to the god Shiva, preserving a unique architectural beauty reminiscent of Khmer style. The scale itself is modest, and during the restoration process, much of it has become simple brickwork, so those expecting vast ruins might find it somewhat lacking in highlights. However, the entrance fee is only about 15,000 VND, making it affordable and easy to visit on the way from Mui Ne to Phan Thiet. Thus, it’s an ideal spot to feel the breath of history.
Located on a small hill, the area around the ruins offers panoramic views of Phan Thiet city and its coastline. Since there are no detailed explanation panels in Japanese, if you do a little research beforehand on the history of the Champa Kingdom and its feat of repelling even the mighty Khmer Empire, what might otherwise appear as mere ‘old brick towers’ will transform into monuments testifying to a proud kingdom.
Insider Tips for Maximizing Your Mui Ne Trip
Mui Ne is a long, narrow resort area stretching along a beautiful coastline. Unlike urban areas, it can often be difficult to hail a taxi. Therefore, using a ride-hailing app like ‘Grab’ or arranging a taxi or jeep tour through your hotel is the smartest and safest way to get around.
Especially for outdoor spots like the Fishing Village and Fairy Stream, the midday sun is extremely strong. To prevent exhaustion, it’s best to join an early morning tour or aim for visiting during dusk.
Additionally, when shopping at local stalls or markets along the coast, a good tip to avoid trouble is to have small denomination bills ready. Presenting large bills might lead to vendors claiming they have no change. While immersing yourself in Mui Ne’s laid-back local atmosphere, prioritize both safety and comfort to fully enjoy the deep charm of this destination.
