Brandenburg Gate

No Image Available

📍 Address: Pariser Platz, 10117 Berlin, Germany

This is Berlin’s most iconic landmark, once symbolizing the glory of the Prussian Kingdom and then standing beyond the wall as a symbol of division during the Cold War. Today, it stands as a symbol of peace for a unified Germany, freely accessible to all.

Atop the 26-meter-high sandstone gate shines the Quadriga, a sculpture of Victoria, the goddess of victory, riding a four-horse chariot. While its majestic presence under a blue sky is magnificent, we recommend visiting from dusk into the night. The sight of the colossal gate illuminated in golden light, emerging from the darkness, is breathtakingly beautiful.

It changes its expression depending on the weather; on cloudy days, the weight of history is even more pronounced against the gray sky. During the day, it tends to get crowded with tourists, demonstrations, and events, so if you wish to quietly soak in its atmosphere, an early morning or late-night visit would be ideal.

Reichstag Building

📍 Address: Platz der Republik 1, 11011 Berlin, Germany

Located just north of the Brandenburg Gate, this is the seat of the German Bundestag (Federal Parliament). It’s a symbol of democracy and transparency, where a historically imposing exterior beautifully merges with a modern glass dome designed by British architect Norman Foster.

Inside the glass dome, a spiral ramp allows visitors to ascend to the top while listening to a free audio guide. Visiting at dusk reveals a spectacular scene as the Berlin cityscape and the gradient of the sky reflect off the glass windows.

【Important Note】Admission to the dome is free, but it operates on a ‘strict advance reservation system’ via the official website. You cannot simply walk in on the day, so secure your reservation slot several weeks to months in advance once your travel dates are firm. On the day of your visit, be sure to bring your passport or other identification registered at the time of booking.

Berlin Cathedral

📍 Address: Am Lustgarten, 10178 Berlin, Germany

Located on Museum Island, this is Berlin’s largest cathedral, built as a royal commemorative church for the House of Hohenzollern. Its majestic appearance, having recovered from extensive war damage, still shows bullet marks on its exterior walls, reflecting the tumultuous history it endured.

Stepping inside, you’ll be speechless at the magnificent altar, beautiful mosaic decorations, and the grand organ with over 7,000 pipes. Furthermore, the crypt below houses the beautiful coffins of the royal family, making it an excellent sight. On a clear day, be sure to climb the 270 steps to the outer dome walkway (rooftop). Beyond these relatively easy-to-climb stairs, a 360-degree panoramic view of Berlin awaits.

If you’re tired from walking, take a break on the lawn of the ‘Lustgarten’ garden, which stretches out in front of the cathedral, and gaze up at the blue dome – that’s the local way. It’s also very convenient to access by taking the 100 or 200 bus lines, which travel past many tourist attractions.

Berlin Wall Memorial

📍 Address: Bernauer Str. 111, 13355 Berlin, Germany

While the East Side Gallery’s art is famous when it comes to the ‘Berlin Wall’, if you want to learn about the history of division in a real and vivid way, this Berlin Wall Memorial Park is an absolute must-visit.

Spanning along Bernauer Street, this site preserves and reconstructs parts of the original wall, watchtowers, and the ‘death strip’ which was forbidden to enter. The video materials at the visitor center and the panoramic view of the wall from the documentation center’s observation tower vividly bring to mind the tense lives of the divided people and the tragedies of escape during that era.

Please be aware that around this quiet and solemn park, there have been reports of pickpockets and scam groups posing as deaf individuals or charity workers, asking for signatures and then demanding money. If asked for a signature by a stranger, firmly refuse or ignore them and walk away, exercising extreme caution.

Berlin Story Bunker

No Image Available

📍 Address: Schöneberger Str. 23A, 10963 Berlin, Germany

Utilizing a massive air-raid bunker from World War II, this is a deep museum that thoroughly explores Berlin’s dark history and the rise and fall of the Nazi regime (Berlin Story Bunker).

While it features reproductions like the Führerbunker room where Hitler spent his final days, the greatest characteristic of this facility is its ‘overwhelming amount of information’. Rather than visual entertainment, it vividly confronts visitors with how the nation spiraled towards ruin, presented chronologically through solemn photographs, vast textual documents, and audio guides (available in English and German only).

If you seriously read through everything, it will take 3 to 4 hours, and can be quite draining both mentally and physically. Therefore, we recommend visiting with a decent level of English proficiency (or with a translation app ready) and the determination to confront history. After your visit, it will undoubtedly be a special experience that prompts deep reflection on peace and history.

Tips for Exploring Berlin: Connecting History and Present

Berlin is a unique city where the raw scars of war and division remain right next to the sophisticated atmosphere of a metropolis. By not just admiring beautiful scenery but also understanding ‘what happened in that place,’ your appreciation as a traveler will multiply manifold.

To navigate efficiently, we recommend utilizing the 100 or 200 bus lines. These routes pass many major attractions, allowing you to enjoy the scenery while traveling. Also, popular sites like the Reichstag Building often require advance reservations, so diligent preparation before your trip is key to a successful journey. Prepare comfortable shoes and immerse yourself deeply in Berlin’s profound charm.
