Tochigi Prefecture is a place where rich nature and profound history coexist. From popular tourist spots to deep, hidden gems known only to a few, captivating locations are scattered throughout the prefecture, drawing the hearts of travelers.
This article introduces five carefully selected spots truly worth visiting, including breathtaking hiking trails, a mystical phantom waterfall glowing in blue, a colossal Kannon statue boasting overwhelming scale, and a suspension bridge. We also provide thorough, real-world information to help you enjoy the local area smoothly, such as access precautions and the best times to visit to avoid crowds.
Oshiraji Falls
📍 Address: Shimoisano, Yaita, Tochigi 329-2502, Japan
Nestled quietly deep in the mountains of Yaita, Tochigi Prefecture, ‘Oshiraji Falls’ is known as a ‘phantom waterfall’ because it only appears when conditions are just right. While water often doesn’t flow, aiming for a time of abundant water, such as a few days after rain, will allow you to witness the beautifully cascading falls.
The main highlight of this spot is, without a doubt, its mysteriously cobalt-blue basin. When sunlight filters through the trees, a vibrant color known as ‘Oshiraji Blue’ emerges, creating a breathtaking contrast with the surrounding moss-covered rocks and fresh greenery. Even if the waterfall isn’t flowing, the scenery of this basin alone makes it well worth the visit.
From the parking lot, it’s about a 10-minute walk down a trail to the waterfall viewing platform. Although the distance is short, about 300m, tree roots protrude and it can be especially slippery after rain, so we strongly recommend wearing sturdy shoes like trekking shoes rather than athletic shoes. Also, due to the rich natural environment, there are many insects and bear sightings have been reported, so bringing insect repellent and a bear bell is advisable for peace of mind.
For practical advice when accessing by car, we recommend the ‘southern route’ if you are coming from the Nishinasuno area. The northern route involves about 10km of winding roads, half of which are narrow and require caution when passing oncoming vehicles. While the southern route also has curves, the road width is relatively wider, making it easier for travelers who are not confident drivers to access. Be sure to check information beforehand as the surrounding roads are closed during winter.
Senjogahara
📍 Address: Chugushi, Nikko, Tochigi 321-1661, Japan
Located within Nikko National Park, ‘Senjogahara’ is a vast upland marsh spanning approximately 400 hectares at an altitude of about 1,400m. Its unusual name originates from a myth where the god of Mt. Nantai (a great serpent) and the god of Mt. Akagi (a giant centipede) fiercely contended for ownership of Lake Chuzenji. A lake formed by volcanic activity about 20,000 years ago gradually transformed into the current marshland over a long period.
At first glance, it may appear like a desolate plain, but once you step inside, it’s a treasure trove of valuable flora and fauna. In summer, cotton grass, Spiraea salicifolia, and delicate irises bloom abundantly, and in autumn, the entire marsh glows golden with ‘kusamomiji’ (grass foliage), enchanting visitors. It’s also known for its rich variety of wild birds, and if you visit early in the morning, you’ll find birdwatchers with impressive cameras listening intently to their songs.
For travelers, we recommend early morning trekking starting around 7 AM. During this time, when there are fewer tourists, you can have the tranquility and fresh air of the marsh all to yourself. The classic route from Akanuma to Yudaki is safe for beginners and families, as it follows well-maintained wooden paths with minimal elevation changes. The powerful Yudaki Falls that appear before you after a tiring walk offer a different kind of intensity than Kegon Falls.
Ample parking is available and usually smooth, but during peak autumn foliage, road congestion is common, so early morning action is essential. This is also a bear habitat, so enjoy your walk with respect for nature, ringing a bear bell.
Hachimanyama Park Adventure Bridge
📍 Address: 1 Chome-1-3 Oiso, Utsunomiya, Tochigi 320-0014, Japan
Hachimanyama Park, while located in the heart of Utsunomiya City, is surrounded by rich nature. Spanning the vast valley within the park is the ‘Adventure Bridge’. Completed in 1998, this bridge boasts a very rare structure from the perspective of bridge engineering, being the first ‘stress-ribbon bridge with steel stiffening girders (Monostrum-type steel stress-ribbon bridge)’ in Japan.
The main feature of this suspension bridge, which boasts a total length of 152m and a height of approximately 30m, is its unique silhouette. There is an elevation difference of about 7m between both ends and the central part, giving it a shape that sags significantly towards the center. Therefore, the area near the bridge entrance is stepped, and as you walk, the scenery below gradually opens up.
While the word ‘suspension bridge’ might conjure images of scary swaying, in reality, it’s very robustly built, so you’ll feel almost no swaying when walking normally, making it safe even for those who are not fond of heights. From the center of the bridge, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Utsunomiya city and the large pond within the park, especially on a clear day, where the breeze makes it an ideal viewing spot.
A point for travelers to consider is that the park is quite undulating, so just strolling around can be good exercise. Visiting with comfortable walking shoes is recommended. Although there are several parking lots, they tend to fill up during cherry blossom season and on weekends, so considering nearby paid parking or using public transportation like buses will make your visit smoother.
Heiwa Kannon (Peace Kannon)
📍 Address: 1174 Oyamachi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi 321-0345, Japan
Oya Town in Utsunomiya City is famous as the production area of ‘Oya stone’, which has been prized as a building material since ancient times. Towering within Oya Park is the ‘Heiwa Kannon’ (Peace Kannon), hand-carved directly into the sheer rock face of a former quarry. Its height is ’88 shaku 8 sun 8 bu’ (approximately 26.9 meters), meticulously crafted with a focus on the auspicious number ‘8’, boasting a massive size that surpasses the Great Buddha of Nara.
This Kannon statue was carved over six years, starting in 1948, to commemorate the war dead of the Pacific War and pray for world peace. This masterpiece, completed through the collaboration of a Tokyo University of the Arts professor and local stonemasons, possesses an overwhelming sense of scale, uniquely integrating natural bedrock and artificial sculpture. Visiting at dusk, when illuminated by the setting sun, highlights the shadows on the rock face, making its prayer for peace feel even more divine.
Unlike the ‘Oya Kannon (Oya Magaibutsu)’ at the nearby Oya-ji Temple, which is a paid historical site carved in the Heian period, this Heiwa Kannon is located within a municipal park, allowing free viewing 24 hours a day, which is a great advantage. A slightly steep iron staircase is provided to the left of the Kannon statue, which you can climb to reach the height behind the Kannon’s chest. This offers a rare opportunity to observe the facial details up close.
Combining a visit with exploring the massive underground space of the Oya History Museum and strolling through the Oya area, which is seeing an increase in stylish cafes, makes for the most fulfilling tourist route for travelers. You will undoubtedly be left breathless by its sudden appearance just a short walk from the free parking lot.
Ryumon Falls
📍 Address: 414 Taki, Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi 321-0633, Japan
Ryumon Falls, located on the E Gawa River in Nasukarasuyama City, is a magnificent waterfall where water cascades down approximately 20 meters in height and 65 meters in width. A legend remains that a great serpent (dragon) with supernatural powers to grant wishes once lived in this waterfall, which is the origin of its name.
A unique aspect of this spot is the collaboration between the beauty of nature’s formations and ‘railways’. The JR Karasuyama Line runs directly above the waterfall, and the sight of a local train passing through the lush green scenery captivates not only railway enthusiasts but also many photography lovers. The composition of the waterfall and train, changing expressions with the seasons – cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, and autumn leaves – offers a unique photo opportunity that can only be captured here.
The waterfall’s excellent accessibility, just a 5-minute walk from JR Karasuyama Line’s ‘Taki Station’, is also a major attraction for travelers. Once you arrive, don’t just admire the view from the observation deck; be sure to descend the steep stairs to get close to the waterfall basin. Especially the day after rain, when the water volume increases, you can experience the roar and spray of the waterfall firsthand, feeling as if a dragon is truly approaching.
Additionally, there are historical and cultural attractions nearby, such as the ‘Ryumon Furusato Folk Museum’, which relates to the legend, and the ‘Dokutsu Sakagura’ (Cave Sake Brewery), where sake is aged using a former wartime underground factory. Visiting in the early morning is recommended for those who wish to spend a leisurely time, as you can avoid crowds and quietly enjoy the negative ions of the waterfall.
Tips for Deeply Enjoying Tochigi Prefecture’s Tourist Attractions
Many of Tochigi Prefecture’s tourist spots leverage the natural topography, often involving long walks or treks over uneven terrain. Therefore, regardless of the season you visit, having comfortable sneakers or trekking shoes is fundamental for a pleasant journey.
Furthermore, due to the long distances between areas, renting a car is overwhelmingly convenient for efficiently touring the tourist attractions. However, for routes heading to mountainous areas like ‘Oshiraji Falls’ and ‘Senjogahara’ introduced in this article, there are unique natural precautions such as road closures in winter, sudden weather changes, and even encounters with wild animals.
