Beyond mere spot introductions, we provide real-world information to help you enjoy Toronto 120%, including the best times to visit to avoid crowds, essential local delicacies, and often-overlooked deep dive attractions.

CN Tower

Spot Image

📍 Address: 290 Bremner Blvd, Toronto, ON M5V 3L9 Canada

Standing approximately 553 meters tall, the ‘CN Tower’ is an absolute landmark that towers over the Toronto skyline. Since its construction as a communication tower in 1976, it reigned as the world’s tallest freestanding structure for about 30 years. From its observation deck, you can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views of the vast urban cityscape below and the immense Lake Ontario stretching out like a sea.

The views aren’t the only highlight. One floor down from the main observation deck, the ‘Glass Floor’ offers a thrilling experience where you stand on a transparent glass floor, looking straight down to the ground far below. For those seeking even more excitement, the ‘EdgeWalk’ activity, where you walk along the tower’s exterior rim tethered by a single rope, is also popular.

To avoid crowds, the best time to visit is right after opening, around 9 AM. The lines at the ticket counter will be shorter, allowing you to comfortably enjoy the view. Alternatively, aiming for the romantic hours from dusk to nightfall is also recommended, but be aware that sunset in Toronto’s summer (June to August) can be past 9 PM, so adjust your visit time accordingly if night views are your priority.

Casa Loma

Spot Image

📍 Address: 1 Austin Terrace, Toronto, ON M5R 1X8 Canada

A surreal sight: a medieval European castle suddenly appearing in the heart of a modern North American metropolis. That’s ‘Casa Loma.’ Built in the early 20th century by Sir Henry Pellatt, a financier who amassed immense wealth from hydroelectric power at Niagara Falls, this grand mansion, with its opulent interiors and meticulously maintained beautiful gardens, truly overwhelms visitors.

One of its charms is the freedom to explore without a set route. Besides touring the luxurious rooms on each floor, you can climb narrow tower stairs to the very top or walk through the dimly lit, long ‘underground tunnel’ connecting the main house to the stables, offering a sense of adventure. It has also served as a filming location for numerous Hollywood movies, including ‘X-MEN,’ making it an irresistible spot for film buffs.

With its Gothic and antique atmosphere, many travelers enjoy dressing in steampunk or classical fashion for photoshoots. During the autumn Halloween season, night-time horror events are held, further enhancing the castle’s eerie and fantastical ambiance – definitely experience it if your timing allows.

St. Lawrence Market

Spot Image

📍 Address: Toronto, Ontario M5E 1C3 Canada

Dating back to 1803, ‘St. Lawrence Market’ is truly a culinary paradise, often called the ‘Kitchen of Toronto.’ Inside its massive red-brick building, stalls overflow with fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, fish, cheeses, bakeries, and souvenirs, creating a lively atmosphere. It’s not a generic tourist market but a place where you can still feel the pulse and buzz of local life.

An absolute must-try local delicacy here is the peameal bacon sandwich from ‘Carousel Bakery.’ This sandwich features generous slices of Canada’s famous thick peameal bacon, and the Toronto way to enjoy it is by slathering it with the ‘maple mustard’ available at the counter. Seafood lovers should also try the lobster roll at ‘Buster’s Sea Cove’ or the fresh oysters at ‘Mike’s Fish Market.’

Lunchtime gets very crowded with both locals and tourists, so we recommend visiting early in the morning to enjoy a brunch-style food tour. On Saturdays, a ‘Farmers Market’ is held in an adjacent building, featuring fresh specialty products brought by nearby farmers, so if you’re staying over the weekend, definitely aim for a Saturday morning visit.

The Distillery Historic District

Spot Image

📍 Address: 55 Mill St, Toronto, ON M5A 3C4 Canada

The ‘Distillery Historic District’ is a pedestrian-only entertainment area redeveloped from the site of what was once the largest whiskey distillery in the British Empire. Its 19th-century Victorian brick buildings and cobblestone lanes have been preserved, making it one of Toronto’s most photogenic spots – every corner is a picture waiting to be taken.

The area is bustling with trendy cafes, restaurants, high-end boutiques, and art galleries. As a remnant of its brewing past, craft beer breweries are dotted throughout, offering a great opportunity for a tasting tour. Even more surprisingly, within this historic area, there’s a sake brewery (‘Ontario Spring Water Sake Company’) where you can taste freshly brewed Japanese sake made on Canadian soil.

While enjoyable year-round, the biggest highlight is the ‘Christmas Market’ in winter. The entire district is illuminated with beautiful lights, featuring a giant tree and stalls, creating a fairytale-like world. However, during the Christmas season, especially on weekends, it can get so crowded that admission tickets are required, so it’s advisable to plan your visit with ample time.

Toronto Island Park – Olympic Island

Spot Image

📍 Address: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

If you want to escape the city’s hustle and bustle and leisurely enjoy nature, head to ‘Toronto Island.’ A short 13-15 minute ferry ride from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal in downtown brings you to a lush, resort-like world. From the ferry deck en route to the island, you can capture stunning photos of Toronto’s skyline, including the CN Tower.

Cars are prohibited on the island, making it remarkably quiet and air-clear. You can rent bicycles (or quadricycles) to explore the island, sunbathe on the beaches, or paddle kayaks on Lake Ontario, with plenty of outdoor activities available. Another hidden gem unique to this island is the chance to watch propeller planes taking off from Billy Bishop Airport up close on the western side.

While there are several restaurants and cafes on the island, we recommend having a ‘picnic.’ Buy delicious deli items and bread from St. Lawrence Market on the mainland, then sit on the grass, enjoying lunch with a view of the metropolitan skyline – it’s sure to be an unforgettable memory of your Toronto trip.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Toronto Trip

Toronto is a vast and diverse city. To efficiently visit multiple attractions, we highly recommend using a TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) day pass or the ‘Toronto CityPASS,’ which offers discounted admission and skip-the-line access to major attractions. Especially when visiting the CN Tower or Casa Loma, the CityPASS can save you a significant amount of time by allowing you to bypass ticket counter queues.

Also, Toronto’s climate differs from Japan’s; summers have strong sunlight and late sunsets, while winters are severely cold with sub-zero temperatures. When walking on the cobblestones of the Distillery District or cycling on Toronto Island, wear comfortable sneakers and dress in layers to easily adjust to temperature changes.
